How to be Green in your Home

Lay back, close your eyes, and imagine yourself immersed in a beautiful, lush forest. When you open your eyes, you see the light dappling through the green leaves as the sun blankets the mossy forest floor.

Now, imagine that feeling of being surrounded by green foliage in your own home. This is where my dream bathroom comes in – every surface is covered in green! Using green as an accent is a tale as old as time. Think about your grandparent’s avocado green toilets and tubs with the lush green shag carpet tickling your toes.

From deep olive to zesty lime, green is here to stay. The 1970s green has been successfully re-imagined in the following inspirational examples of our modern decade. The adage used to be that green was a bold approach to your home. I think the contrary. Green is one of the most usable colours in interior design, only second to blue.

The mood board we created below shows how to incorporate green into your home effectively.

Green: Decor and Art

The following images are fantastic examples of how to bring hues of green into your home through less permanent means. From green lighting, art, trim, fabric, furniture, and accessories, these are excellent examples of how to "green-if yooouuuu" - yes, that is a reference to Wicked. As an aside, can we please discuss the trailer, I hope the full film is as incredible!

Green: Paint is the Answer

If you are feeling a tad more bold, go ahead and paint! These spaces are beautiful examples of various shades of green. From muddy greens to bold emerald green, these shades show the variety of green and how you can craft a curated space with paint.

Finally, my new favourite way to bring green into your home is through kitchens. Jewel tones in kitchens have been making their way back to the front and centre of the design world. You know me: I loathe the term "trend," especially when it comes to the very permanent portions of your homes such as kitchens. Let's be honest, too: These are often the most expensive rooms in your homes as far as renovations, design, and fittings.

Seeing Dakota Johnson's beautifully simple kitchen in all green was one of those design "ah-ha" moments. The kitchen is bathed in Alligator Alley by Benjamin Moore with simple white walls and countertops. What really struck me was twofold: first, how the green paired so beautifully with the mid-century modern vibes of the home and, secondly, how the proportions of the kitchen were so attainable. This is not a grand-scale kitchen where you can go wild with green because there is more space between the vibrant green finishes to sort of soften it. The proportions of this kitchen are found in so many mid-century bungalows throughout North America. The entire home is gorgeous, of course, thanks to Pierce and Ward, who are fantastic designers based in L.A.

Here are some other stunning green kitchens that I love - they are of course all British because there is just something about a British kitchen! I think it is because I am also obsessed with AGA Cookers...
